When my parents told my brother and I that we were moving to the Unites States, I was full of wonder and curiosity. Being 11 years old, I had limited thoughts but I really tried to understand what America is before I went. I imagined things like American food, culture, trend and etc.
In South Korea, most people knew America for its hollywood movies and technology. Everyone believed that in America, nearly nothing is impossible thanks to its large population, land and money. Korean people have huge appreciation for the America because Americans saved us from utter destruction from the communists of the North during the Korean war.
Honestly, America wasn't quite what I expected.
Compared to South korea where everyone lives in high rise apartments, Americans live in houses with properties. Which is nearly impossible in korea unless you live on farms. You have no idea how much of a shock that was to a 11 year old boy. It was mind blowing.
Another mind blowing thing about America was how diverse people are. I was surprised to see so many different races of people in the same group. That is becuase in Korea, it is rare to see someone that is not asian.
Another big surprise was the culture. I was expecting some sort of "rules" Americans follow, but surprised to learn that there really isn't one. (except being nice to other people of course) Interestingly, In Korea, there are many rules/culture you have to follow. Such as taking shoes off when entering one's house, bowing down when greeting, and speaking formal language to anyone older than you.
